The guide to eating just enough when you know you want more. And maybe working it off too ;)

Have you seen this new series on TLC, One Big Happy Family? It’s yet another reality show but the niche this time is TLC is following around an obese family and showing there trials and tribulations of being obese.

Let me start with I’m not judging I watch a lot of these TLC specials about obese and morbidly obese and I am more scared and saddened than anything. But I am a little shocked, and disgusted, and spending a lot of time shaking my head. Especially when the subjects are younger and you know that there problem is being enabled by an adult.

I also don’t fully agree with exploiting folks and putting them on  these reality shows the put so much issue on their disability (I still raise an eyebrow at the Little People Big World show), but in the case of this and other Obese shows I make a bit of an exception. On these shows I’ve learned that obesity isn’t something that just happens there are ways to combat it and thanks to the 650lb virgin I’ve seen there are ways to overcome it. I think that is an important message that many in our society need to hear.

So while I’m still not completely sold on the One Big Happy Family idea I do see it’s pros and cons. Take a look at these clips from the show below and let me know what are your thought. Is it helping or hurting the family and America by showing these images.

So it’s been a few months since KFC launched their new Grilled Chicken. We talked about back in April with our KFC gambling on chicken that is grilled, not fried , and Oprah has even given it away. So now it’s time to see what you think with our question of the week.

What do you think of  KFC’s  Grilled Chicken? Or an even better question would you rather they stick to fried?

As the economy goes down, food retailers have been so desperate to get us in their stores that they are giving food away. In the past few months we’ve had Oprah giving us KFC, Dunkin Donuts declaring free donuts days, Friday’s giving away buy 1 get 1 free meals, and Starbucks’ daily reminders to double up on our lattes.

These freebies and promotions may save you a little extra cash, but what do they cost you. As we fight to cut back, eat healthy, and make the right choices retailers are pushing the other way to eat more and over indulge. Did you ever notice they never give away the things that are good for you; where is the Free Salad Day or the Buy 1 Get 1 Free carrot sticks?  Instead we get donuts, coffee, and $5 dollar foot longs. And speaking of savings what are you really saving; ask your self if they weren’t giving away free donuts would I have walked into Dunkin Donuts? Or Before Oprah gave me a coupon when is the last time you visited a KFC? You may find that there is really no benefit to getting it free. It may even encourage you spend more, because once you’re in the store for your 1 free item you’re enticed to buy more. Like who is eating a donut without a drink to go with it.

Now I’m not suggesting that retailers are horrible for pushing all of this free food on us, they are doing their jobs, selling a product. What I am saying is we need to do our jobs and work towards healthier eating habits. You can start with walking by the free samples in Costco or passing along the Buy 1 get 1 free coupon to a friend.

Recently a loyal GreedyGirl fan alerted me to 3 new promotions which inspired this post. We felt it was our Greedy Girl duty to send out this PSA and encourage all to pass up the freebies and save our waistlines.

Here are some of the latest promotions to steer clear of. Feel free post comments with any promotions you see in the future that we should avoid.

    • M&M Mars Company https://secure.realchocolate.com/ every Friday they are giving coupons for free chocolate. Just don’t even click this link on a Friday from now till September.
    • Chick-Fil-A http://www.cowappreciationday.com/ this Friday Chick-Fil-A is giving away free food if you come dressed like a cow. I hope I don’t have to tell you how silly you would look dressed as a cow, but just in case try brown bagging your lunch on Friday to avoid the temptation to go into Chick-Fil-A and Mooooo or something.

This is a great article on ways to spruce up you meals to be more weight management friendly. I couldn’t have said it better my self.

My favorite tip from the article: add fresh or canned tomatoes to your pasta dishes. We get so into the jar sauces I never would have thought about adding more tomatoes to get the extra nutritional punch.
